How well do you know Washington state? As part of our bucket lists of must–do experiences across the region, we boiled down what everyone needs to know about our geography. Basically: one direction is whales, the other one is bears.

Start where Lewis and Clark ended: the Columbia River. Olympia is the city with the big white dome (Tacoma has one too though, now that we think about it), and Long Beach is the really long beach.

Puget Sound is a crowded area, but we have to make room for both vampires and Trader Joe’s lines.

The middle of the state might confuse you; it’s somehow both Bavarian and otherworldly.

Go east, check out the rodeos and farmland, and take a ride over Spokane. But you have to pronounce it right.

If you see a mountain that looks like Rainier, there’s only about a 20 percent chance that it’s actually Rainier.

Wine, bears, and some dang good cheese: the southeast part of the state shows off.
